Sean Croal is an upright and electric bassist, as well as a composer, bandleader, and educator. Born in Alberta, Sean left at a young age to study bass in Doha, Qatar, under renowned bassist Matteo Gaspari of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. After studying music in Qatar, Finland, and Alberta, Sean now splits his time between Edmonton and Toronto. He is quickly establishing himself as one of the most active names in Canada’s music scene, performing alongside artists such as PJ Perry, Jocelyn Gould, and Melissa Aldana, to name a few. Sean performs with a wide range of ensembles, including his own ensemble, and has opened for high-profile acts such as Cory Henry, Robert Plant, and Alison Krauss. 

Having recently released their first EP entitled No One Knew, Sean’s ensemble takes an eclectic and genre-crossing approach to the jazz trio, incorporating modern influences into classic standards and original compositions. The ensemble features Evan Miles on piano and Alex Sgrignoli on drums, each member bringing their unique voice. 

Outside of his own ensembles, Sean is an in-demand sideman, performing across a variety of styles with groups such as New Standards (Edmonton), The Ruen Brothers (United Kingdom/Kentucky), Dwell, and many others. He continues to establish himself throughout Toronto while remaining deeply involved in the development and education of the music community across Canada and beyond.
