Julie Mahendran’s first vocal inspiration was Whitney Houston, and the legacy of her influences from Chaka Khan to Aretha Franklin. Expanding back in time to find new influences in jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, she also found a love for vocalese- singing and writing lyrics set to instrumental classics which was popularized by Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. Bringing these various decades of music into her arrangements and original songs, Julie’s versatile voice interprets it all with her signature clarity, feeling and sense of fun. Born in Montreal and raised in Edmonton, Julie has lived in London, New York and Boston- where she attended Berklee College of Music on scholarship, studying with and performing for legends including Cheryl Bentyne of the Manhattan Transfer, Herb Alpert, Patti Austin, and Benny Golson. Currently based in Toronto, Julie has released 2 albums. The first, NEVER DO WITHOUT YOU, reveals her classic jazz influences in a chordless trio setting with just bass and drums.
