Described as being “…fiendishly precise…” (pitchfork.com), Canadian drummer/percussionist Nico Dann respectfully disagrees. As a musician-parent-web-developer-educator, Nico is kept busy playing with the Tania Gill Quartet, Robin Jessome’s Carla Bley tribute-band Blunt Object, maintaining a small teaching studio, building websites, making lunches and creating halloween costumes. Having been performing and recording for more than 20 years, past projects include leading New York avant-jazz group Rhododendron, touring with chart-topping indie luminary tUnE-yArDs (4AD), ex Montreal Indie Band Sister Suvi , Toronto’s Bernice (led by sister Robin Dann), holding down the drum chair in Rebecca Hennessy’s Fog Brass band, Toronto sci-fi jazz ensemble GGTY with Harley Card, Michael Herring and Don Scott and Indie-Folk band Elephant Ear. Dann has also shared the stage with many fabulous musicians including Alex Samaras, Allison Au, Andrew Downing, Anna Webber, Dan Fortin, Felicity Williams, Karen Ng, Karl Silveira, Michael Davidson, Nate Renner, Reg Schwager, Roberto Occhipinti and Trevor Hogg among many others. Nico has performed at the Toronto Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreal’s Off Jazz Festival, POP Montreal, Off Jazz Montreal, Ottawa Jazz Festival, Hamilton’s Something Else Festival, the Guelph Summer Music Festival, South by Southwest, Glastonbury, and New York’s CMJ. Nico made his Classical debut with father Steven Dann and Joel Quarrington at the National Arts Centre in 2008. In 2010 Nico made his musical theatre debut at Toronto’s Summerworks Festival. Nico has studied with Jim Black, Jim Blackley, Rémi Bolduc, Dave Douglas, Antonio Hart, Michel Lambert, Chris McCann, Dave Patel, and Nasheet Waits among others. Nico has a BMus and an MA in Jazz from McGill University and CUNY Queens College in NYC, respectively. Nico has attended the Banff International Workshop on Jazz and Creative Music as well as an independent residency at the Banff Centre. Currently Nico currently lives in Toronto with his wife Classical soprano Ilana Zarankin and their two children.
