NATHAN TRAN QUINTET BIO–
The Nathan Tran Quintet was formed during Nathan's studies at Humber College to play his recitals and record an EP of original music. The goal of this group is to interpret and improvise over Nathan's jazz compositions alongside some standard repertoire. Alto and tenor saxophones are used.
Nathan was raised in Saskatoon where he studied classical piano repertoire with Kathleen Solose, completing his ARCT certificate. He fell in love with composers such as Chopin, Bach, Debussy, and Scriabin. Upon moving to Toronto in 2021, he studied privately with Hilario Duran and Robi Botos. He now performs as a sideman and leader, and gives piano lessons. His favourites in jazz piano include Barry Harris, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Teddy Wilson, and Willie "The Lion" Smith, as well as modern artists such as Sacha Perry and Rossano Sportiello. His primary interests are in bebop and stride piano playing.
Nathan's style of writing in jazz is informed by the neat structures and harmonic colours of his favourite classical composers. It is also inspired by Canadian composers such as David Braid. Stylistically, Nathan's quintet could mostly be described as an extension of the bebop style. Nathan's method of band-leading puts value in improvisation as much
as it does in strong compositions. Each band member's unique style is given space to be explored.
