Ethiopian Canadian Singer/Songwriter | Ethio-Jazz, Folk, Contemporary 

Hailing from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, now based in Toronto, Melat is a singer, songwriter, producer and composer whose music blends contemporary, folk and Ethio-jazz, roots sounds. Born and raised in Ethiopia's capital, Melat has always been drawn to music, seeking out every opportunity to participate, grow, and contribute meaningfully to both her own artistic journey and the community around her. 

Two major influences in her artistic expression are the legendary Ethiopian singers Gigi (Ejigayehu Shibabaw) and Aster Aweke. Her powerful vocal styles, deep connection to Ethiopian musical tradition, and ability to bridge Ethio-jazz sounds with contemporary artistry have left a lasting imprint on Melat's own approach to songwriting and performance. 

A major turning point came in 2015, when Melat won the first season of Balageru (Ethiopian Idol). That breakthrough opened the door to a variety of showcases and performances, from intimate stages to large-scale concerts, allowing her to tour across her hometown and beyond. Since then, Melat has released several music videos, explored diverse genres, and used music as a tool for community development and fundraising.
