Joaquin Núñez is a multi-award-winning Cuban-Canadian percussionist and founder of Habana Safari, a Toronto-based ensemble established in 2007 that has become one of Canada’s most distinctive Cuban music acts. Blending traditional Cuban music, Afro-Cuban jazz, and contemporary influences, the group explores the evolution of Cuban music from early genres such as danza, contradanza, and danzón to modern interpretations, combining traditional instruments like bata drums with trumpet, piano, bass, and violin. Known for their electrifying live performances and dynamic percussion, Habana Safari captivates audiences with an authentic yet innovative sound. Their acclaimed debut album, Ruta de la Clave, won the Latin Canada Award for Album of the Year and received a 2026 CFMA nomination, with original compositions by Núñez and collaborations with Cuban pianist Dayramir Gonzálezearning praise as a standout modern Afro-Cuban jazz recording.
