“Every note that he plays seems to have a purpose and a place, and both purpose and place usually have something to do with melody.”
– The Globe and Mail
In addition to his well-known role as a jazz performer and educator, for the past decade Roy Patterson has been resurrecting the imperfect memories of the music he heard on daily radio shows while growing up in rural Nova Scotia: a constant stream of country, folk, and 1960s & 70s hit parade, and crafting highly melodic textural compositions, brought to life in performance with a jazz sensibility.
In 2014 the first Jacob’s Cattle CD was released. “Songs From My Father’s House” is a collection of original music representing his first foray into the world of instrumental Americana. After a series of personnel changes, the current roundup of Jacob’s Cattle features Andrew Downing – bass, Mike Eckert – pedal steel & dobro, Jessica Deutsch – violin, and Roy Patterson – guitar. The quartet without drums represents a modern interpretation of the old string bands from the early and mid 20th century.
Mid-century rural meets urban modern with noir undertones.
