Pay What You Can
Toronto-based vocalist Beverly Taft has presented jazz standards, bossa nova, blues, ballads, chansons, and originals to audiences in Toronto and beyond for more than 20 years. She loves to mine the Great American Songbook for neglected gems to add to her ever-growing repertoire, and is always expanding her knowledge of Brazilian bossa nova, which she enjoys singing in the original Portuguese. For Beverly, tapping into the essence of a song – its musicality, story and feeling – is what draws her deeper and deeper into musical pursuits. She’s grateful for the magical time on the bandstand with jazz partners, and the connection with live (in-the-same-room) audiences, in nightclubs, all-ages listening venues, and at outdoor festivals. Over the years she has performed tributes to some of her favourite genres and composers, including “Loesser is the Most” and “Tales of a Loesser God,” (at Toronto venues and for the Barrie Jazz and Blues Fest), “The Bossa Nova Project” (at the Peterborough Jazz Festival and in Toronto), “The Chansonettes” (French jazz at Alliance Francaise and other venues), and “The Swell Fellas” (swing and novelty tunes of the 1920s and ‘30s). Her performances this month will feature songs from all of these projects, as well as some of the originals she co-wrote with guitarist Nathan Hiltz for their 2014 recording. She’s thrilled to be back at The Rex with some of her favourite musicians - for the first time since March 15, 2020!
