Al Qahwa performs original and traditional music with diverse influences such as North African grooves, Arabic melodies, and jazz . The group name Al Qahwa is Arabic for “the coffee house”. It was inspired by the coffee house culture in the Middle East where people would go to hear the latest news, music, poetry and stories. Al Qahwa is Maryem Tollar on vocals, riqq (Arabic tambourine) and qanun (Arabic tableharp); Ernie Tollar on wind instruments; Naghmeh Fahrahmand on percussion; Omneya Tollar on vocals and percussion; and Lauren Barnett on vocals and saxophone and other special guests.
